What sports vision training is
Sports vision training focuses on how an athlete's eyes and brain gather and use visual information under game conditions: tracking fast-moving objects, judging depth and speed, reacting quickly, and staying aware of what's happening at the edges of vision.
Skills we look at
- Eye tracking. Following a ball or puck without losing it
- Depth perception. Judging distance and speed
- Eye-hand and eye-body coordination
- Visual reaction time
- Peripheral awareness
- Focusing flexibility. Switching quickly between near and far
How we assess it
We start with a baseline of the athlete's visual skills, then look at the demands of their sport and position. The glasses or contact lens prescription and eye health stay with the athlete's regular optometrist, since clear, comfortable vision is the foundation for everything else.
How we train
Training uses in-office drills and home exercises aimed at the skills that matter for the athlete's sport, and we re-measure to track progress.
Visual skills are one part of performance. Training complements coaching and practice rather than replacing them, and research on how much it carries over to game results is still developing.
If an athlete has had a concussion and still has blurry or double vision, dizziness or trouble reading, see concussion vision rehabilitation.
